Passing on a Spiritual Inheritance to our Children

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” (Proverbs 13:22)

Recently, I have been drawn to the concept of inheritance in the Bible. An inheritance is something that you gain, not because you worked for it, but because somebody else did. Someone else labors, and you get to benefit simply because of your relationship to them.

We often think of a financial inheritance, but the concept goes far beyond that. For example, imagine being among the children who were born after the nation of Israel had taken possession of the Promised Land. A previous generation fought the battles that allowed you to dwell in the “land of milk and honey.” What they had to fight for, you simply inherited.

Leaving Our Kids a Spiritual Inheritance

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever.” (Deuteronomy 29:29)

One of the things that motivates me in my walk with God is that the spiritual ground that I take will be inherited by my children. My biological children, as well as spiritual sons and daughters, will get to inherit the territory that I fight for and obtain.

Parents, have you considered that you will leave a spiritual inheritance to your children? It is good to desire and plan to leave your kids a financial blessing, but how much more should we be concerned about leaving our children an inheritance that is of eternal value?

• The revelations we receive from the Lord
• Our prayers and spiritual disciplines
• The encounters with God that we have
• The way that we love others and serve
• Our obedience to God and how we seek first His kingdom
• The victories that we gain over sin and demonic strongholds
• The anointing and power of the Holy Spirit upon our lives
• Our selflessness and generosity
• The depth of our relationship with God and our love for Him

All of these can become generational blessings that we pass on to our children!

Obviously, our kids will have to make their own choice to follow Jesus and grow their own relationship with God. But we can pave the way for them to step into the things of God and walk into spiritual territory that took us years to attain. Our ceiling can be their floor. And hopefully they will continue to gain more spiritual ground so that they can pass an inheritance to their children as well.

Just as we have to be intentional if we want to bless our children with a financial inheritance, let’s be intentional to store up a treasure of spiritual wealth for our kids. What would happen if each generation got to reap the spiritual benefits of the previous one? Imagine the kingdom of God advancing from one generation to another, with ever-increasing glory!
